Professional Guinea Pig Grooming and Well-being at Little Dolittle

Keeping your guinea pigs healthy and happy involves more than just a good diet and a clean enclosure. Regular grooming and health assessments are essential components of responsible pet ownership. At Little Dolittle, based in Tibshelf, we offer a comprehensive range of grooming and care services designed specifically for your small furry friends.

We understand that the cost of living is a concern for everyone right now. That is why we have kept our individual treatment prices low and created special packages that offer discounts when multiple treatments are booked together. Investing in regular maintenance now is a smart way to save money in the long run, as it helps identify potential health issues before they become expensive veterinary emergencies.

For those who choose Little Dolittle for their guinea pig boarding, we provide nail trimming and well-being check absolutely free of charge during their stay!

Our services and why they are important

1. Well-being checks

  • The Benefit: A thorough head-to-toe assessment helps monitor your piggie's health, including their weight, skin condition, and dental health.

  • The Risk: Guinea pigs are prey animals and naturally hide illness. Without regular checks, issues like skin conditions or dental issues can go unnoticed until they are life-threatening.

2. Nail trimming & foot spur removal

  • The Benefit: We keep nails at a safe length and carefully remove thickened skin growths (spurs) from the feet to ensure comfortable movement.

  • The Risk: Overgrown nails can curl into the foot pads, causing painful infections, while unmanaged spurs can lead to "bumblefoot" (pododermatitis), which is difficult and costly to treat.

3. Ear cleaning

  • The Benefit: Removing excess wax and discharge keeps the ear canal healthy.

  • The Risk: Built-up wax can cause bacteria and mites, leading to painful ear infections or balance issues.

4. Grease gland cleaning

  • The Benefit: We use piggie-safe products (organic coconut oil) to remove the sticky buildup from the gland located at the base of the spine (especially common in boars).

  • The Risk: A neglected grease gland can become impacted, irritated, or infected, causing significant discomfort and skin issues.

5. Boar cleaning

  • The Benefit: A gentle, hygienic cleaning of the perineal sac to remove accumulated discharge or trapped hay debris.

  • The Risk: In older boars, the muscles can weaken, leading to impaction. If not cleaned, this can cause infections, blockages, and severe odour.

6. Bathing

  • The Benefit: A specialised bath using guinea pig-safe products (Gorgeous Guineas) helps manage skin conditions and removes stubborn dirt.

  • The Risk: Excessively dirty coats can lead to "flystrike" or fungal skin infections like ringworm, which can spread to other pets and even humans.

7. Haircuts

  • The Benefit: Essential for long-haired guinea pigs to keep them clean and prevent overheating and matting.

  • The Risk: Matted fur traps urine and faeces against the skin, leading to painful sores, restricted movement, and hygiene-related illnesses.
