Just like us, cats slow down as they age. Senior cats can develop stiff joints, dental problems, or even a little confusion from feline dementia — but with gentle care and understanding, they can still enjoy their golden years feeling safe, loved, and relaxed.
At Little Dolittle, we provide home visits for cats, including elderly or special-needs cats who are happiest in their own familiar environment. Our visits are always carried out with patience, kindness, and an understanding of what older cats need most — comfort and consistency.
1. Making Mealtimes Easy and Enjoyable
Older cats often find it uncomfortable to crouch down to floor level, especially if they have arthritis. We recommend using raised food and water bowls to make eating easier on their joints.
Many senior cats also have dental problems, so soft, easy-to-eat food is best. During visits, we’re happy to mash food gently with a potato masher or a fork so it’s easier to chew and swallow. Little adjustments like this make a big difference to how well they eat — and how happy they feel.

2. Litter Trays Made Simple
A high-sided litter tray might be tricky for an elderly cat to climb into. We always recommend that trays are low enough for easy access, reducing strain on sore legs and hips.
If your cat sometimes misses the tray, why not use washable mats nearby and keep things clean and comfortable without fuss. Our aim is always to maintain your cat’s dignity and routine.
3. Safe and Gentle Home Access
Some older cats struggle to jump through open windows or climb fences like they used to. Make sure your cat has safe, easy access in and out of the house, without putting stress on their joints or risking a fall.
If you’re away, we’ll double-check that doors and access points are secure and comfortable for your cat, ensuring they stay safe at all times.
4. Calm, Familiar Comfort
Cats with dementia or declining senses often find change unsettling. That’s why our home visits are calm and unhurried, allowing your cat to feel relaxed in their own surroundings.
We keep feeding areas, litter trays, and favourite sleeping spots just as they like them — and we always follow your cat’s normal routine as closely as possible. Familiarity is key to helping elderly cats feel secure and content.
5. Supporting Stiff Joints and Senior Health
If your cat seems stiff or reluctant to move, arthritis may be the cause. Warm, soft bedding in a draught-free spot helps, and gentle heat pads (if approved by your vet) can provide extra comfort.
We’re also happy to keep an eye on their movement, eating, or toileting habits while you’re away — and update you if we notice any changes that may need veterinary attention.
6. Gentle Grooming and TLC
Older cats often find it difficult to groom properly, especially around their back and legs. During home visits, we can offer gentle brushing to keep their coats clean and free of knots — and to give them a bit of soothing attention.
We take pride in giving elderly cats the patience, respect, and love they deserve. Whether it’s a cuddle, a quiet chat, or just company while they eat, we’re here to make sure they feel cared for while you’re away.
Loving Care in the Comfort of Home
At Little Dolittle, we believe every cat deserves comfort and dignity in their senior years. Our home visit service is ideal for elderly cats who find catteries or new environments stressful.
We’ll make sure your golden oldie is safe, warm, well-fed, and loved — all in the place they feel most secure: their own home.
